Hargrave Heritage Society - Meeting Notes

Notes of the Hargrave Heritage society inaugural meeting on 21st July 2022

Those present: About 12 people attended the meeting which was chaired by David Taylor.

1. After introductions the meeting focused on the setting up of a Hargrave Heritage Society as the successor to the Hargrave Heritage Project which completed its task with the Hargrave Heritage Exhibition event held on May 21st at Hargrave church.

2. It was recognised that one of the important lessons learnt through the project has been the interest shown by people living outside Hargrave who might have lived in the village some years ago or have had past relatives who lived in the village and their very valuable contributions to the project. The Hargrave Heritage Society will need to ensure that interest and those contributions can continue.

3. In sharing the work of the Society amongst villagers it was also recognised that a variety of methods of communications will need to be used which should include regular contributions to the Village Newsletter and Benefice magazines which go to every household in the village. The website and village facebook site will be increasingly important as methods of sharing information.

4. Regular meetings of the society, perhaps on a bi-monthly basis are seen as important and these could include speakers and particular themes. The society is fortunate to have people like David Ellin who is willing and able to talk about archeological finds within the village and surrounding areas and Nick Newman who is currently leading on research and a detailed analysis of the church graveyard and the headstones.

5.At this stage it is important to continue to encourage participation from people within the village and to ensure it has an interest for all age groups. It was also recognised that to run such a society requires some finance, ie the maintenance of the website and the fee for using the Village Hall, all require finance and so a membership fee and/or attendance fees should beconsidered.

6. Actions agreed:
a)  A Hargrave Heritage Society should be established.
b)  The society should hold regular meetings and share information and updates using a variety of means.
c)  Speakers and possible visits should be considered.
d)  Immediate and long term finance for the society should be found and at this stage a possible endowment from the original Project Group will be sought and at a future meeting the setting of a membership fee and/or attendance fee will be decided upon.
e)  The next meeting should be used to encourage greater village participation and to that end it was suggested an event requesting villagers help to identify people and events in photos held by the society as well as encouraging people to bring any other photos relating to the village and people past and present. The date for this event will be in September in the Village Hall. (Actually arranged for 8th October 22)

The meeting closed at 8.45pm
