Hargrave Heritage Society - Meeting Notes

On Saturday 8th October the newly formed Hargrave Heritage Society invited Hargrave residents and others, interested in the Heritage of Hargrave, to the Village Hall to help identify people, events and locations found on various photographs that have been collected over the years and now reside with the Heritage Society. Around 25 people were able to pop in and add their knowledge and ideas to the photographs on display and at the same time to reminisce with fellow villagers and recognise at the same time how “time flies”.

Meeting 08/10/22

All photographs are scanned or are being scanned so as to be included on the Heritage web site for easy access for anybody across the World. A short presentation by Paul Rogers reminded people about how to join the society at no cost and that people from Australia, the USA and New Zealand have already linked to the website and made contributions and they also can join the society. Society members will be kept up to date with news and developments through a regular newsletter and articles in the Benefice magazine and the Hargrave newsletter.

Nick Newman, and ex resident of Hargrave, has contributed many articles to the web site and is now working with others to accurately record locations and information on grave stones in the St Edmunds village churchyard. Nick spoke about this initiative and the work still to be done and with the assistance of Paul Rogers, how each grave stone will be recorded on the website and this will eventually enable anybody to locate a gravestone and see a picture of the gravestone and hopefully more easily see the text on that gravestone.

The next meeting of the Society is booked for Saturday the 3rd of December at 2 pm in the village hall when Hargrave resident David Ellin will give a talk on “Discovering village history through field walking and metal detecting finds.” David is an avid metal detectorist, who with others has made many significant discoveries in and around this area and contributed greatly tothe knowledge of this area going back centuries. This event is open to anybody interested.

The Society is at the stage of planning for the coming year and in particular identifying people and topics that could be part of future meetings and events. Some topics that have already been seen as of possible interest include:

Changes to farming over the past 200 years and how that would have affected local farming practices and populations.

Beekeeping past and present.

Ideas on future topics are very much welcomed. For all those people who would like to join the society then go to the sign-up on-line form here.

A great deal of information is to be found on the websiteas indeed it can be seen at the display in St Edmunds Church.

David Taylor - member of the Hargrave Heritage Society.
